Biography

I graduated from Novosibirsk State University (NSU) with a BSc degree in 2000 (Chemistry, ecology and environmental management) and a MSc degree in 2002 (Chemistry and physical chemistry). In 2002, I was awarded with a medal for the best MSc thesis by the Russian Academy of Science. Also, in 2002 I was awarded a scholarship and a research grant of the Novosibirsk Region Government for post-graduate students (2002). In 2004, I received a PhD in geochemistry. I have worked at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy (IGM) SB RAS (Novosibirsk, Russia) on various multidisciplinary projects. I have been working on waste management, material characterisation, and metal speciation in a variety of industrial wastes at UCL on projects funded by EPSRC/NSFC, UCL, industry and the Environment Agency.

Research Summary

My research and teaching interests lay in interdisciplinary area including geochemistry, environmental science, environmental engineering, material science, analytical chemistry and biogeochemistry. I investigate element behaviour in natural and anthropogenic systems, for example, elements migration, mobility and speciation as well as substance transformation, water-rock interaction and geochemical barriers. Moreover, I have over 10 years of research experience in material characterisation using a complex of different methods (wet chemistry, AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, SEM/EDS, XRD, STA, XAS, etc.); development of the sequential extraction procedures in order to investigate element species in natural and polluted systems; development of innovative methods (mechanical, chemical, and thermobaric treatment) for modification of natural materials intensifying their sorption properties. Also, part of my research is focused on the biogeochemical aspects: biogeochemistry of Altay’s lakes, lakes at the Baikal region and Novosibirsk reservoir; the role of the biogenic factor of element accumulation and biominiralization in soil, peat, sapropel and iron-manganese nodules. Using a holistic approach in environmental investigation is very important in order to understand clearly behaviour of elements in the environment and solve different important issues concerned with, for example, element speciation, water-rock interaction, land, air and water pollution. The considerable part of my research is focused on the development of cost-effective methods of industrial solid waste and wastewater remediation on the basis of natural (e.g., clay, peat, limestone, zeolite, iron (III) hydroxide, etc.), modified materials (e.g., peat-humic agent (PHA), organic-mineral complex, activated carbon), cementitious materials (e.g., Portland cement, fly ash, lime), and wastes (fly ash and biomass ash). I developed element recovery technologies from a variety of industrial wastes (e.g., AMD, residues from municipal solid waste incineration facilities, biomass ashes, etc.). I am very interested in industrial symbiosis and circular economy, for example, strategic utilization of wastes as secondary raw materials (e.g., use of residues from energy-from-waste facilities in cement industry, biomass ashes in fertiliser industry). I am an author of 4 book chapters and over 30 referred full papers, the results of which were reported and discussed at the national and international scientific conferences.
