Biography

I have twenty nine years experience in length metrology, having joined the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) directly after graduating from the University of Cambridge. I have worked in many research subjects in length metrology including end standards, coordinate metrology, large scale metrology and micro-scale coordinate metrology. I have designed, built, and programmed several world class instruments for the measurement of length, shape and size including the Primary Length Bar Interferometer, the NPL Small CMM, the NPL Primary Phase-Stepping Gauge Block interferometer and the Secondary Length Bar Interferometer. I have overseen the successful knowledge transfer of several of these instruments to a UK manufacturer, and over 30 examples of the commercial versions of the Gauge Block Interferometer and Length Bar Interferometers have been sold worldwide with several sales leads in the pipeline.

I represent NPL on several international committees and am an internationally acknowledged expert in length bar and gauge block metrology and have given several training courses, for international scientists, in these areas. I have run several large international comparisons and presented my work at many national and international conferences.

I am a Chartered Physicist and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.

Research Summary

My research area is precision dimensional metrology with specialisation in interferometric techniques such as fringe counting interferometry or multiple-wavelength interferometry.

Teaching Summary

I have no formal teaching background though I have taught at several levels informally. Whilst at school, I taught a short introductory course on programming to other school children. I have delivered several sets of training on specific instrument operation and on uncertainty budget preparation for accredited laboratories.
