Biography

Professor Leung is Professor of Dental Education and Head of the Department of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) at University College London Eastman Dental Institute (UCLEDI).

He is on the UCL Academic Board and is Programme Director for the MSc in Restorative Dental Practice (RDP) at the Eastman Dental Institute.

Professor Leung’s areas of expertise are in integrated restorative based total patient care and innovations in dental education. His main pedagogic research are in novel teaching techniques and assessment methodologies, and the development of effective feedback to help facilitate high quality learning in dentistry.

Professor Leung is the Academic Lead and Chief Examiner in Clinical Skills (Dental Manikin) for the Overseas Registrations Examination (ORE) for the UK General Dental Council (GDC). At UCL Eastman Dental Institute, he examines the MSc and the Postgraduate Diploma in Restorative Dental Practice, and the Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Dental Aesthetics. He has successfully supervised 45 Masters' Dissertations to-date.

Professor Leung is Vice Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and an elected member of the Faculty Board. He is on its education, finance and scientific committees. He was Chairman of the FDGS/MGDS Examinations for 12 years, and chaired the MFD/Diploma of Primary Care Dentistry Examinations for 3 years. He has an extensive postgraduate teaching and examining profile in the UK, Ireland, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Sudan, Qatar and Sweden.

Professor Leung is a recipient of the 2017 Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) Excellence in Dental Education Mature Career Educator Award.  

Prior to joining UCL Eastman Dental Institute, Professor Leung was an under-graduate and post-graduate clinical teacher at King’s College London Dental Institute for 15 years, including 6 years as Deputy Director of the Maurice Wohl Dental Practice Centre at the Department of Primary Dental Care. He was an Examiner for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses for 18 years, including being a Presiding Examiner for 4 years.
