Biography

I hold an MA and PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Nottingham (UK). After completing my PhD in vocabulary acquisition and processing (2012), I worked as a Teaching Associate in Bilingualism and Language Learning (Feb 2012-Sep 2012) and as Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics (Sep 2012-Dec 2016) at the University of Nottingham. During my research leave I worked as Visiting Professor at the University of Barcelona (Sep 2015-July 2016). In January 2017 I moved to the UCL Institute of Education to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and TESOL.

Research Summary

My research focuses on the teaching and learning of vocabulary in a second or foreign language. More specifically, I am interested in examining the effectiveness of different teaching and learning methodologies for improving both declarative and procedural vocabulary knowledge. My main research interests include the use of psycholinguistic measures of reaction times (RTs) and eye-tracking to explore learners' vocabulary acquisition, with a particular focus on the process of reading.

My recent research has examined second language (L2) learners’ acquisition of new vocabulary, both single words and multi-word expressions, from reading using eye-tracking methodology. My research interests also involve different applications of eye-tracking for the examination of the L2 learning process, including learners’ engagement with different sources of input in multi-modal materials. My research has appeared in international peer-reviewed journals such as Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Second Language Research, Language Teaching Research, or Language Testing. I am currently committee member of the Vocabulary Studies Special Interest Group of the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL).

Teaching Summary

I have taught a variety of applied linguistics modules both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including introductory modules on English language and linguistics and more specialised modules on first and second language acquisition and literacy development. I have also convened and taught a postgraduate module on intercultural communication. I am currently teaching the MA module Second Language Acquisition. I also supervise several PhD projects on different aspects of vocabulary teaching and learning.
