Research Summary
In the past I worked extensively on structure and bonding of the rare earth elements with a focus on the oxidation state of cerium.
In recent years I have focused more on collaborative work with the McMillan and Howard groups on the synthesis and study of layered carbonitrides and their exfoliation. I also work with Dr Christoph Salzmann on the encapsulation of pnictogens in carbon nanotubes.
Teaching Summary
I am also interested in developing new directions in undergraduate practical teaching that emphasize the epistemic doubt associated with research and that help students to understand the crucial societal role that science plays in providing data on which political decisions can be made. In our #UCLChemAirPoll project, 150 first year undergraduates into primary school classes to discuss the importance of measurement. Measurements of NO2 levels across a wide swathe of London are mapped to give both our students and the children and their families a richer idea of the seriousness of the problem of air pollution in our city.
I coordinate and lecture on UCL Chemistry's Chemistry for Biologists first year programme.
