Biography

I am Research Associate in the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL), contributing to the cultural heritage data modelling and semantic enrichment aims of the EU Horizon 2020 CROSSCULT project.  I hold a PhD on Semantic Indexing of Archaeological Grey Literature, I am a certified text analyst of the General Architecture for Text Engineering GATE, a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a member of the British Computing Society (BCS).

In the past  have been a member of the Hypermedia Research Group (USW) working with Prof. Douglas Tudhope, Dr. Daniel Cunnilfe and Ceri Binding on numerous research projects and co-delivering modules in Internet Application Development, and Interactive Multimedia. I led the development of the Welsh Government funded project WNLT that delivered a suite of open source natural language processing modules for Welsh. I have also worked  with Prof. Hamish Fyfe in the Digital R&D fund for the arts in Wales and in the Creative Wales Exchange Network providing research and managerial support to knowledge exchange activities.

Research Summary

My research interests focus on cultural heritage data modelling and natural language processing, particularly in semantic annotation and metadata enrichment with respect to conceptual reference models, ontologies and knowledge base resources. I have been involved in the AHRC funded project STAR exploring the role of CIDOC-CRM in semantic annotation for the purposes of cross-searching and in the EU FP7 funded project Ariadne applying Named Entity Recognition and Relation Extraction methods for the semantic enrichment of multilingual (English, Dutch, and Swedish) archaeological reports.
