Research Summary
My work brings together basic and clinical scientists to undertake research on host-pathogen interactions, antibiotic resistance and vaccine development. My research includes biofilms and quorum sensing in colonisation of the nasopharynx in children by capsulated bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. During colonisation evolution of antibiotic resistance and transmission occur. Vaccine development is targeted towards a non-serotype vaccine against S. pneumoniae that will provide broad protection at a lower cost than existing vaccines. This would make the vaccine globally accessible to include resource limited developing countries. Host-pathogen studies also extend to the inflammatory role of endogenous sources of Gram-negative endotoxins (LPS) during chronic disease such as liver tranplantation and chronic heart disease are being investigated.
Teaching Summary
Teach on various under- and post-graduate taught and laboratory based courses in Biomedical Sciences. Academic Director for a new MSc in "Frontiers in Infection & Immunity" planned to be introduced in September 2009. Organiser for a number student selected modules on vaccines, antibioic resistance, and a laboratory-based module on "Challenge of antibioic resistance". I run a laboratory based Graduate Skills course on Basic bacteriology and recombinant DNA. Supervise MSc/PhD students. Supervise summer research students on scholarships. Supervise Nuffield Bursary scholars. Invited speaker to local schools to promote higher education in the Biomedical Science in particular Microbiology.
