Biography

I am a Senior Teaching Fellow at both The Bartlett School of Architecture and The Arena Centre for Research-based Education, University College London. At the Arena Centre I lead on the UCL Connected Curriculum, UCL's distinct approach to research-based education. I support education development in The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment. I teach on UCL Arena Two, the staff development programme for educators. And I conduct education-focused research. At The Bartlett School of Architecture I coordinate a third-year undergraduate module, The Dissertation, an optional module on the BSc Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies programme.

Research Summary

My research interests are diverse and multi-disciplinary. Most recently my work focuses on the intersection of research-based education and the holistic university physical environment. I lead a small research project looking at research-based education and learning spaces, both within and beyond traditional settings. My other research agenda measures the impact of Connected Curriculum (the institution's research-based education strategy). Former research has focused on the themes of improving the student experience, peer assessment, researcher development, social justice and equality, minorities and diversity in space.

My doctoral research (completed in 2013) was situated at the intersection of gender studies, queer theory, geographies of sexualities, and architectural history. The work focuses on the production of domestic space. It employed a feminist, queer theorised and political approach to architectural history, specifically by focusing on sexual minorities’ experiences of domesticity in London. Publications in this area are under my previous surname (Pilkey), while education-focused research is published under Carnell.

Teaching Summary

I currently coordinate ENVS3020, The Dissertation  a third year undergraduate module on the BSc Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies programme. In this module students have nine months to conduct rigorous independent research on a subject relevant to the built environment and write a substantial dissertation, with plenty of peer and tutor support. In The Bartlett, I also play a role on the Part 3 programme (Module 1). Finally, each year I supervise a small number of Masters of Architecture (MArch) fifth-year dissertation students. In 2016 my supervisee, Robin Farmer, received a dissertation medal commendation from The Royal Institute of British Architects, for his work, A flâneur’s guide to boystown: Performativity, pride and place

I also teach on UCL Arena Two, our Higher Education Academy accredited education development programme.
