Biography

Originally from Kilkenny in Ireland, Brian joined the University in January 2018. He is a registered dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council, and has experience working as a clinical dietitian in hospitals in Ireland, London and the Midlands, England. Currently, he is an honorary senior dietitian at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH)At the British Dietetic Association (BDA) he chairs the England Board and is a Director of the BDA Council. He also currently sits on the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) Research and Evidence Based Practice Committee. 

Brian has spent some time volunteering in India. His voluntary work was part of a wider nutritional surveillance project for Seva Mandir, a community development non-profit organisation in the Udaipur district of Rajasthan, India. Prior to joining the University, he served as a Lecturer in Dietetics at the University of Hertfordshire.

Research Summary

Brian's research interests include;


Understanding and changing eating and physical activity behaviours.

Development, implementation and evaluation of behaviour change interventions.

Clinical trials and evidence synthesis.


Brian uses both qualitative and quantitative methodologies in his empirical work. His work is characterised by an interdisciplinary focus (e.g. health services research, dietetics, public health and health psychology).

Teaching Summary

Brian contributes to teaching on the BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Medical Sciences, MSc in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition and MSc in Eating Disorders and Clinical Nutrition.
