Biography

Chanakya Arya is a member of the Design Group, and a chartered engineer with a PhD in Civil Engineering from Imperial College London. He started his career with Tarmac Construction as a site engineer, and later worked for G. Maunsell and Partners on the design, construction and maintenance of highway schemes in the UK and overseas. His research is focused on the problem of chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete structures, and developing demonstrable cost-effective methods of assessing corrosion, and preventing, repairing, and managing stocks of concrete structures vulnerable to corrosion damage.

Research Summary

Current Research
  • Developing a practical, reliable and inexpensive method of assessing the free chloride content of concrete, to determine the risk of corrosion;
  • Investigation of the relationship between cracking in concrete to steel corrosion;
  • investigation of electrochemical chloride removal (ECR), a technique for rehabilitating concrete structures
  • Use of externally bonded fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) composites to strengthen concrete structures
  • Bridge management taking into account safety, economy and sustainability requirements
  • High performance steel for the reinforcement of concrete, with Prof. D Beckett (Greenwich University) and MMFX Technologies Corporation, US
  • Whole life cost analysis in tender evaluation (with Prof. P.R. Vassie)
  • Sustainability assessment of highway bridge structures (with Prof. P.R. Vassie).
