Biography

Christos received his M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2006, and his PhD in Robotics from ETH Zurich in 2011. Subsequently, he moved to Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School as a post-doctoral researcher. In 2013, he was awarded a Hamlyn Fellowship, and moved to the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Imperial College London. Since 2015, he is a Lecturer at the Dep. Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, University College London, within the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences. Christos is affiliated with the Translational Imaging group of the Centre for Medical Image Computing.

Christos leads the Robotics and Vision in Medicine (RVIM) team, which conducts research on computer vision and robotics for micro-surgery. Christos is the recipient of the Fight for Sight Award (2014), the Fight for Sight New Lecturer's Grant (2015), and the Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Award (2016). Further, he was awarded an ERC Starting Grant to work on vitreoretinal surgical robots in 2017.

Research Summary

Christos conducts research on surgical robotics and image-guidance algorithms. More specifically, he is working at the interface of flexible surgical robots, medicine, and biology, investigating how miniaturised flexible robots can assist in the delivery of cellular-level therapies such as genes and stem cells.

Christos' Robotics and Vision in Medicine team is embedded in the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences. Christos is affiliated with the Translational Imaging Group of the Centre for Medical Computing, and is closely collaborating with teams from UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital.
