Biography

Educated at the University of Oxford and gaining my PhD at the University of London, I worked as a social worker, public health specialist and strategic manager within health & social care before entering academia.  I joined the Institute of Education in 2005.
I am currently a Reader in Sociology of Education, and combine teaching, leadership work within the Faculty and research and writing within my role.

Research Summary

My work lies at the intersection between education, social class, gender, processes of internationalisation and marketisation, and the formation of elites.  A large part of my recent work has focused on private and elite education: how can we define elite education, what kind of privileges are made available through private and elite schooling processes, and undertaking international comparisons of elite tracks or configurations within national education systems.  I am particularly interested in how institutional practices within variously-positioned education providers intersect with family and student subjectivities and subsequently shape relations of inequality.
I have also engaged extensively with the concepts of agency, privilege and affect, examining how they may be mutually constituted. This work is central in identifying where possibilities for social change may lie within privileged settings and environments.

Teaching Summary

I have taught at undergraduate, Masters and doctoral level – research methods and data analysis modules, and delivered sociology of education, gender & sexuality lectures.  My current teaching is at the undergraduate level – where I help run the BA Education Studies degree, am Faculty Director for UG Provision, and lead a third year module ‘Elites, Education & Inequalities’.
