Biography

I am a Professor of Digital Humanities and Head of the Department of Information Studies at University College London; and Vice-Dean for Research for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. From 2009-2013 I was Director, then Co-Director of the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities.

Research Groups
Research Summary

My research is on the use of digital resources in the humanities; digital textual resources; reading in physical and digital environments; and the use of social networking for reserach and in cultural heritage.

I was lead researcher of the User Experience group of the Implementing New Knowledge Environments project (INKE), funded by the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research council (SSHRC), which aims to produce new digital environments for reading and research in the humanities, and was associate director of the JISC-funded LinkSphere project, studying the use of social networking applications by humanities researchers and  co-investigator of the JISC funded Digital Humanities Open Educational Resources project.  I also led the QRator project a collaborative project with CASA and UCL Grant Museum, which uses QR codes and iPads to allow visitors to record their views about museum objects. This is funded by the UCL Beacon for Public Engagement. I have also co-investigated of several research projects funded by SSHRC's Image Text Sound Technologies programme to study users of digital resources and the institutional context of Digital Humanities research.

Other completed research includes being Principle Investigator of the AHRC-funded Log Analysis of Internet Resources in the Arts and Humanities project (LAIRAH); associate director of the JISC-funded Virtual Research Environments for Archaeology (VERA) project;  and co-investigator of the User Centred Interactive Search of Digital Libraries project (UCIS), funded by the EPSRC

I was chair of the International Programme Committee for the Digital Humanities 2009 conference, am a member of the editorial board of Informatica Umanistica, the new Italian Digital Humanities journal, and serve on the of the advisory boards of several DH research projects, including the Synergies project, an electronic publication infrastructure for Canadian Humanities and Social Sciences. I am a member of the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council Peer Review College and Vice-Dean for research for UCL Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
