I have worked as a teacher, lecturer, LEA adviser, editor and civil servant, joining the Institute of Education, University of London in 1993, where I am now a Professor of Post-Compulsory Education, Co-Director of the Centre for Post-14 Education and Work and Lead for the Lifelong Learning Group within the Department of Education, Practice and Society. I have experience of directing and participating in international, national and London-related research projects.  Current projects include: Widening participation and marginalised youth in five cities in Canada, the US and England; the East London Vocational Education and Training: Innovation Through Partnership Programme; Researching the London Area-Based Review Process; FE and Skills Across the Four Countries of the UK; Developing Social Ecosystems. I also chair the DfE-funded Expert Panel on 16-19 Study Programmes, am on the Steering Group of the Outstanding Teaching, Learning and Assessment Technical Skills National Programme and a member of the Skills for Londoners Taskforce Advisory Group. I have published widely in a variety of forms on topics related to post-14 education policy, vocational education and training, lifelong learning and curriculum and qualifications reform and I currently supervise eight doctoral students who are researching with me in these areas.
