In late 2010 I set up and have been leading since UCL's Physical Activity Research Group (PARG) (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/slms/domains/population-health/parg).
Since early 2011 I have been a National Institute for Health Research Career Development Fellow.
My main current interests are the the study of physical activity and sedentary behaviour as independent risk factors for cardiometabolic disease, the pathways of action of sedentary behaviour and physical activity, the socioeconomic distribution of sedentary behaviour, the interactions between physical activity behaviours and alcohol intake in terms of cardiovascular and liver disease risk, and physical activity teaching in medical schools curricula. Other interests include the socioeconomic distribution of obesity, the contribution of health behaviours in socioeconomic inequalities in health, physical activity and mental health, the utility of cardiorespiratory fitness for predicting cardiovascular disease, and the measurement of physical activity. I have an (unfulfilled) desire to study the use of physical activity/exercise beyond disease prevention as a tool to maximise positive well-being, an area that falls well outside current public health/medical research funding priorities.
In recent years I have tought subjects relating to the Epidemiology of Physical Activity and Health for several UCL MSc modules (Sports Medicine,Social Epidemiology)and since 2009 I have been organising and delivering the Special Selected Component on Social Inequalities and Health for undergraduate UCL medical students and the UCL Cinical Phychology Doctorate. I also give other lectures for the ULC undergraduate medical degree (MBBS programme). Outside UCL, I have given lectures for MSc students at the University of Bristol and I have developed a week-long module on how to publish in peer-reviewed journals at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain).
