Biography

Liz is a senior lecturer at the London Centre for Leadership in Learning, UCL, Institute of Education. She has led the University of London International Programmes’ on-line MA in Applied Educational Leadership and Management, validated and led two MBAs in Educational Leadership (International) and supported the validation and co-led an MA in Inspection and Regulation.  Consultancy work has included working with the State of Nayarit in Mexico to develop and set up a state education leadership centre, developing and writing materials for the National College for Teaching and Leadership’s school business management development programmes and working with the Training and Development Agency as programme development manager (researching, writing and presenting on school business management).  She has conducted research into school business management, since 1997, designing and carrying out three national surveys, interviews, case studies and focus groups. She is co-author of the first book on school business managers and has published papers and chapters in books on the impact of site-based management on schools as well as presenting nationally and internationally at research and professional conferences. She is currently the Secretary of BELMAS.

Research Summary

Liz has been researching school business managers in a longitudinal study, since 1997.  She was the principal researcher on the first indicative case-study of school bursars and then designed and carried out the first national survey on school bursarship in 1999.  She completed follow-up surveys in 2003/4 and 2006/7 as an element of base-line research into school business management for the National College for Teaching and Leadership.  She also researched how students on the MBA in Education Management for School Bursars responded and contributed to the learning programme and their own professional development.

O’Sullivan, F., Thody, A., and Wood, E., 1998-2000.  Effective School Administration Builds Achieving Schools: An Investigation into Good Practice in School Bursarship in collaboration with the National Bursars Association for the Teacher Training Agency.  A case study of effective school bursars and their characteristics.

More recently she has worked with colleagues researching vignettes and case studies informing the implementation and evaluation of ipsative feedback on masters programmes, and the effective management of headteacher performance.
