Research Summary
Prof Burnstock is best known for his seminal discovery of purinergic signalling and receptors and he has been recognized as the founder of purinergic research. The Autonomic Neuroscience Institute was established in 1995 under the direction of Professor Geoffrey Burnstock, from the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology, UCL and Professor Mike Spyer from the Department of Physiology, UCL and Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine. (Scientific Advisory Board). The Institute was unique in its approach in bringing together a range of skills and technologies, fostering the exchange of knowledge between physiologists, histochemists, biochemists, molecular biologists, pharmacologists, biophysicists, cell biologists, and clinicians. It focussed: on linking research into central and peripheral mechanisms responsible for autonomic control applying basic science to problems in clinical medicine bridging academia and industry and a broad spectrum investigations including urogenital, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, respiratory, obstetric and gynaecological research. In 2004, Geoffrey Burnstock was appointed as the President of the Autonomic Neuroscience Centre. [see website: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ani/ for further information]
