I obtained a first-class Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from University College Cork (UCC) and then went on to study for PhD under the supervision of Prof. Stephen Fahy at UCC and the Tyndall National Institute at Cork (degree awarded by UCC), focussing on defects and transport in dilute nitrides. In 2011 I moved to the Department of Chemistry at University College London (UCL) to work as a postdoc with Prof. Aron Walsh and Prof. Richard Catlow on energy materials, where I have remained since.

Research Summary

My research aims to find computational solutions to problems in materials chemistry and physics, emphasising the effects defects have on the electronic, optical, dynamic and transport properties of semiconductors. My key interest is to understand these effects at a detailed, fundamental level. I have developed a broad expertise in the methodology necessary to gain critical insights to issues involving defects in many materials, ranging from semimetals, through semiconductors and wide-gap conductors to insulators.

Teaching Summary

I am involved in undergraduate teaching and supervise postgraduate students at the Department of Chemistry.
