Biography

Javier studied Chemistry at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid where he specialised in Biochemistry (1992-1997). He then spent 1 year in the Biophysics group, working on quasi-species dynamics, focussing on modelling and studying patterns of reaction-diffusion.

In 1999, Javier started his Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Joaquin Dopazo. Initially based at Glaxo-Wellcome (now GSK), he moved to the CNIO (Spanish National Cancer Research Centre) in 2000 where he finished his work on the analysis of gene expression patterns. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Molecular Biology in 2004.

Shortly after graduating, Javier moved to the UK where he joined the Ensembl project. He developed and lead the comparative genomics efforts in the team until 2013. During this time, he has collaborated with several genome sequencing projects, including the Mammalian Genome Project, the gorilla, the gibbon, the orang-utan, the wallaby, the turkey, the Chinese soft-shell turtle, the zebrafish and the lamprey genomes. In addition, he has participated in the human ENCODE and the mouse ENCODE projects as well as in the 1000 genomes project, providing estimates of ancestral alleles on the human genome.

Research Themes
Research Summary

Javier is interested in characterising novel non-coding DNA elements in the human genome using comparative and functional analyses. From this, he is looking at ways to build an integrative framework for the analysis of the changes in non-coding elements associated with cancer and establish their value for disease prognosis, classification and stratification.

He currently leads the Bill Lyons Informatics Center, a new hub for genomic data analysis on the 6th floor of the Paul O'Gorman building.
