I graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 1997 and was appointed Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at UCL, and Honorary Consultant at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust in October 2007. I was promoted to Reader in 2013.
My primary research interest is in exacerbations of the airway diseases COPD and bronchiectasis, with a particular focus on infective, immune and inflammatory mechanisms, imaging, the role of biomarkers and the development of systemic cardiovascular co-morbidity. My research in COPD extends to the consequences in adults of people born with lung disease of prematurity, and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
My clinical work at the Royal Free includes specialist and community COPD clinics, the London Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Service, and clinics for bronchiectasis including a joint Respiratory-Immunology service for patients with Primary Immunodeficiency.
I am undergraduate teaching lead for Acute Medicine at the Royal Free Campus. I supervise PhD and iBSc students.
I lead a collaboration between UCL, the Royal Free and the Lancet to publish interactive Morning Report cases on the Lancet website.
