Biography

I studied Intercultural Communication (MA, 1999) and Educational Linguistics (PdD, 2003) at Tilburg University, Netherlands, before joining the Institute of Education in 2004. I worked at Imperial College London between 2009 and 2011. I am now based in UCL Knowledge Lab (part of UCL Institute of Education) as Reader in Learning and Communication and Co-Director of the Centre for Multimodal Research.

Research Groups
Research Summary

My research is focused on clinical communication and medical education. Recent projects include ethnographic studies funded by the ESRC on inter-professional communication, surgical education and clinical decision making in the operating theatre. The overall aim of these projects is to develop a social semiotic theory of multimodality, learning and communication; and to apply these theories to improve our understanding of health care. Central to my methodology is in-depth analysis of video recordings of professional activity and artifacts of semiotic work. I am also interested in and have led research in applied linguistics, linguistic ethnography, and language and education.

Teaching Summary

My teaching is focused on research methods. I lead a common research methods module for MA students at UCL Institute of Education -Understanding Research- which runs in Autumn and Spring term, in face-to-face and online mode; and teach on the annual Ethnography, Language and Communication Summer School co-organized with colleagues from King's College London. Previously I was deputy director of MODE, an ESRC funded teaching programme for doctoral students on multimodal methodologies. I frequently give guest lectures, especially for MA programmes aimed at health care professionals.
