Dr Joana Marguarida Simoes
  • Honorary Research Associate
  • Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis
  • Faculty of the Built Environment

Joana arrived to London in 2002, to start a PhD in CASA, about the spatial modelling the spread of infectious diseases. She had finished in 2006 and immediately started working on a startup company, developing a software for catastrophe modelling, that put in practice the skills developed during the PhD. In 2008 she moved to work in a GIS British software company (CADCORP) as a senior software engineer. Two years later, after a short career break, she moved to Italy to work for FAO (UN), as a software development consultant. In less than two years, she designed and implemented a digital logbook system using open source libraries. Currently she is in Barcelona, where she still works for FAO, as a GIS software and design consultant.

Research Themes
Research Summary

Joana's research interests have covered Geocomputation, since her Msc in 1996. She applied GIS to many different different topics such as: flood modelling, fisheries management and  modelling of infectious diseases, in a wide range of perspectives such as: academic, private sector and international organization. Her research has included topics such as: network science (and Small Worlds), complexity theory, cellular automata and agent-based modelling, and to support that she has been actively involved in using  relational databases, open-source software, data modelling specifications, and various programming languages. Ocasionally she descends down to design and program the GIS systems/libraries/plugins.

Teaching Summary

Joana has taught GIS general theoretical and practical courses/classes and special modules applied to fisheries. She also assisted in lab classes of other topics (hydraulics, remote sensing).
