Michael Newton graduated from the School of Pharmacy, University of London in 1959 with a first class honours degree. He undertook research at Nottingham University and was awarded a PhD in 1962. In 1990, he was awarded a DSc by the University of London. He qualified as a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 1959 and became a Fellow in 1979, retiring from the register of Pharmacists in 2010. From 1968 to 1972, he was a Senior Research Scientist (pharmaceutical formulation) at Lilly Research Centre in the UK. He held positions in several UK universities (Manchester, Nottingham and Sunderland) between 1962 to 1982 and was Professor of Pharmaceutics and Head of the Department of Pharmacy at Chelsea College from 1979 to 1983, and Professor and Head of Pharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy, University of London from 1984 until retirement in 2001, when he was appointed Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutics. In the same year he was appointed an Honorary Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University College London. In consecutive years from 1995, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, the Harrison Memorial Medal of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, and the Nagai Foundation (Japan) Distinguished Lectureship and an Honorary Doctorate at the University of Coimbra (Portugal), while in 2000 he was made a Fellow of The School of Pharmacy, University of London.

Research Summary

Michael’s main area of research is associated with the formulation, preparation and function of pharmaceutical dosage forms of capsules, dry powder inhalations, pellets and tablets. The work has resulted in nearly 300 peer reviewed publications, 150 conference presentations, several book chapters, 14 patents and the supervision of 70 PhD students. He has been on the editorial board of several pharmaceutical science/technology journals and was an editor for the International Journal of Pharmaceutics from 1993 to 2000. He has acted as a consultant to several major international pharmaceutical companies both on technical and legal matters. He has presented lectures by invitation to universities, scientific societies and pharmaceutical companies throughout the UK and in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden and the USA.

Teaching Summary

Over the years, Michael has been involved with various aspects of teaching of pharmaceutics and the development of undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses. He has acted as an external examiner for pharmaceutical registration, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees both in the UK, Europe and Asia. He still gives lecture on special topics to courses designed for the pharmaceutical industry.
