Biography

I am a social scientist with a background in sociology, politics, and public policy. I began my career volunteering in Honduras for a non governmental organisation, and went on to work as a research associate at the East London and the City Public Health Authority. I joined UCL in 2002 to work on cluster randomised controlled trials of community-based women's group interventions in Nepal, Bangladesh, India and Malawi.

Research Summary

I specialize in qualitative and participatory methodologies with marginalized groups to develop an understanding of contexts, and understand the barriers to, and facilitators of healthy behaviours in low and middle income countries. My research enables the participation and engagement of a wide variety of stakeholders in the development of health interventions that directly address problems as they are experienced, in the systems that they are experienced. I have applied these methods in research on non-communicable diseases, child marriage, maternal, newborn & child health, nutrition, and health systems. I have an in-depth knowledge of the community context of South Asia, and the community, health systems and policy context of Nepal in particular. I have worked with research partners in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Malawi, Niger and Thailand.

Teaching Summary

I coordinated and taught the Qualitative Research in Action MSc module at the Institute of Child Health from 2004 to 2011. I have also supervised several MSc students, and one PhD student to completion.

My work involves building research capacity among colleagues in partner organisations and I have conducted training in qualitative research methods, participatory evaluation methods, process evaluation and action research.

I currently supervise one Phd student.
