Biography

Before taking on a position at UCL as a lecturer in Science Education, I worked at a large state secondary school in South East London as their Science Advisor (a position similar to the Head of Science). Alongside this, I was a science teacher teaching all classes up to, and including, A-level.

I am a member of the Royal Society of Biology and the SSRG (Subject-Specialist Research Group). International research projects that I have been involved with include: MultiCo (Promoting Youth Scientific Career Awareness and its Attractiveness through Multi-stakeholder Cooperation) and CASSIS (communicating about socio-scientific issues).

Research Summary

I engage with a range of science-education related research, including the uptake of STEM subjects at school, socio-scientific issues, and the professional growth of teachers.

A big passion of mine is biology learning outside the classroom, and how children and teachers connect with and explore such places. I am interested in how agency at these places affects the learning experience. My PhD explores the experiences of secondary school children at a zoo whilst on a biology-related visit.

I am also devoted to work and research related to the continued professional development of science teachers, in particular subject-specialist training and how teachers enact science knowledge from the curriculum.

Teaching Summary

I am the programme leader for the MA in Science Education and I also teach on the Foundations of Science Education module and supervise students. I am a tutor for the PGCE Secondary Science course and also teach on this programme.
