Dr Joana De Amil Da Costa Jacob Ramalho
  • Teaching Fellow
  • Faculty of Arts & Humanities

Joana Rita Ramalho FHEA (MA/PhD Film Studies, UCL) teaches Luso-Brazilian language and culture and Spanish Film from the 1990s at University College London, where she has also lectured on Gothic cinema. In 2015, she became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and, in 2016, she achieved a UCL Arena Fellowship.

Her MA dissertation focused on the disenchanted worlds of Vincente Minnelli's comedies, musicals and melodramas, and her PhD thesis investigated the transatlantic Romantic-Gothic films of early émigré and exile directors. As an undergraduate, she lived and studied in Lisbon and Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), and graduated with a BA in Communication Sciences and Journalism from the New University of Lisbon.

Research Summary

My main research interests include

  • Romanticism, the Gothic and neo-Victorianism in film and television;
  • cinematic representations of death, memory, mourning and oneirism;
  • film musicals and musical moments in film and television;
  • the role of time, space and the senses in classical Hollywood and European cinema.

I have published on thresholds, haptic motifs and sensory contagion in Gothic terror cinema and have also written articles on creepy dolls in Gothic and horror productions and on the use of portraits in the woman’s film cycle of the 1940s. I have presented my work at several international conferences in the UK, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and Portugal.

I welcome proposals for MA dissertations that focus on or overlap with any of the research specialisms mentioned above.
