Research Summary
My main research interests involve the characterization of oral bacterial biofilms. Biofilms of oral bacteria can cause localized diseases in the oral cavity including; caries, periodontal diseases, endodontic, orthodontic and implant infections as well as systemic diseases such as infective endocarditis. My research has focused on the modelling of these oral biofilms to understand adhesion, susceptibility, structure, signalling, transfer of genetic elements and virulence in order to prevent and control diseases caused by biofilm infections. This has primarily involved the use of one specific device, the Constant Depth Film Fermentor, to develop orally relevant biofilms associated with several bacterially-derived diseases. I have been successful in publishing work on those biofilms associated with oral malodour, gingivitis, caries, orthodontics, endodontics and denture plaque. Furthermore, with collaboration from researchers in the Biomaterials field I have been successful in developing relevant models for the testing of antimicrobial-releasing materials to be used in dentistry. This collaboration has resulted in several publications and successful grant applications. During my career biofilm research has become a significant area of microbiology. Hence, although much of my work has been associated with dental biofilms, I have also been successful in publishing work characterising biofilms generally, for example their structure and gene expression. Furthermore, I have also been heavily involved as a committee member in the Biofilm Club (2003-2007), an organisation set up specifically to promote biofilm research throughout microbiology and provide a forum for cutting-edge biofilm research.
Teaching Summary
I have been a member of the Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (formerly The Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education) since 2002. My main teaching responsibilities are associated with the day-to-day supervision of PhD and MSc students. I am presently a principle supervisor for two PhD students and am also primarily responsible for a number of M-level students from the Departments of Prosthetics, Orthodontics and Endodontics. I have been heavily involved in the teaching of both basic and more advanced laboratory techniques.
