Biography

I currently work at UCL, where I research Engagement in Spatial Planning, as well as lecturing and teaching across a range of planning and research subjects. In addition I consult on public engagement in planning, and am reviews and digital content editor for the Built Environment journal, recently launching the Blogged Environment

Previously, I have worked as the Principal Researcher in the international department of the RTPI, developed the State of the Commonwealth Cities methodology, and conducted studies - large and small, quantitative and qualitative, exploratory, longitudinal and methodologically specialist - commissioned by Government departments for policy-making purposes.

Research Summary

My research centres on the relationship between communities and government for excellence in built environment policy and decision-making. I work in both quantitative and qualitative modes. My most recently completed research project on NSIPs (Nationally Significant Infrastructure Planning), was an ESRC-funded project led by Prof Rydin and focused on the role of Publics & Evidence in decision-making on renewable energy infrastructure. I am now working on the Ingrained project looking at Grand Challenges, and conducting follow-up work on the local impacts of NSIPs.

Since 2002, I have conducted a range of studies across collaborative governance, community participation, local planning, spatial planning, public health, urban design governance, and most recently infrastructure. I also recently completed an AHRC-funded project 'Evaluating the Governance of Urban Design', and the book from that study of CABE (the Commission for Architecture & the Built Environment 1999-2010) is in press. I co-founded the Place Alliance in response to the findings of that work.
