I am an anthropologist in the UCL Department of Applied Health Research. I have written extensively on the medical profession, healthcare organisation, policy and governance. My ethnographies of the English NHS have explored market-based reforms, hospital closures, health service networks, and self-care.

After an undergraduate degree in anthropology in Australia, I worked in national healthcare policy organisations for 10 years before becoming an academic. For much of this time I provided policy analysis and led a ten-year longitudinal study of doctors' careers funded by the British Medical Association.

Before joining UCL, I was a Research Fellow in the Department of Health Services Research and Policy, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. During this time I worked on the Health Reform Evaluation Programme, and in the Policy Innovation Research Unit, both funded by the Department of Health Policy Research Programme, and completed my PhD in anthropology, supervised by Judith Green and Justin Waring.

I am a member of the editorial board of Sociology of Health and Illness, the Society for Studies in Organizing Healthcare, and the British Sociological Association. With Oliver Bonnington, I am co-convenor of the London Medical Sociology group.
