Dr Marko Kerac
Appointment
  • Clinical Training Fellow/ NIHR Clinical Lecturer
  • Epidemiology & Public Health
  • Institute of Epidemiology & Health
  • Faculty of Population Health Sciences
Biography

Marko qualified from UCL Medical School, where he first became interested in global child health during student projects and expeditions in Guyana, Yugoslavia/Serbia and India (Delhi, Calcutta).

After initially training in paediatrics in Plymouth and London, he moved to Malawi in 2003-4, working as a clinician and honorary lecturer at the College of Medicine, Blantyre. It was there, on 'MOYO' ward - Malawi's biggest and busiest Nutritional Rehabilitation Centre - that he developed his current interests in child malnutrition and disability. Following a year back in the UK doing the 'Public Health for Developing Countries' Masters at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, he returned to Malawi in late 2005. Again combining clinical and teaching duties, he also began a part-time PhD, working on collaborative research projects between the College of Medicine Malawi, the UCL Institute for Global Health, and Valid International.

Alongside his PhD on ‘Improving the treatment of severe acute malnutrition in childhood, he was also lead researcher on a 2008-2010 UNICEF Nutrition Cluster funded project exploring the Management of Acute Malnutrition in Infants aged <6months (MAMI).

He is currently back in the UK working as a public health doctor and NIHR clinical lecturer. Post-doctoral academic interests continue to have an international focus: on disability, vulnerability and child (especially young infant: ‘MAMI-2’) malnutrition.
