My research interests concern development in children with severe cerebral palsy affecting the whole body who have little or not functional speech; children's use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and tools, and service provision for children with communication disability. My current research is focused on the assessment of early looking behaviours in young children with severe cerebral palsy (www.ucl.ac.uk/gaze), and ways in which to establish profiles of co-morbidity in this group. I also have an interest in the ways in which children with severe cerebral palsy engage in in conversational interaction and social participation with their peers and others, and in determining multi-dimensional factors that inhibit or promote children's participation in formal and informal settings, including the take-up of AAC.
As a speech and language therapist my primary area of clinical practice has been the specialist assessment of communication skills in children with physical disability and complex needs, including facilitating the decision-making involved in selecting and securing appropriate communication equipment, goal-setting, monitoring and evaluation.
