Research Summary

My original disciplinary background is in Human Communication Science (Speech and Language therapy). Subsequently I  trained as a medical anthropologist and my main interests are in diverse aspects of disability and chronic illness in the global south. Specifically I am interested in the qualitative, predominantly participatory investigation of the lives of ill and disabled children and their families, both in the UK and in low income countries, informed by theory from the cross disciplinary arenas of Childhood Studies, Disability Studies and Development studies.

I have clinical, training/teaching and research experience in India and Sri Lanka, and have worked on projects in Bangladesh, Iran and Uganda, Malawi, Taanzania, Kenya and South Africa.

My current particular interests are in disabled children's and their families' experiences and wellbeing, in developing research relationships with INGOs working in disability and development, the development of impact evaluation tools for Community Based Rehabilitation and the experiences and needs of carers supporting people with mental illness or other disabilities or chronic illness. My main methodological focus is on qualitative and participatory methods and approaches.
