Dr. Nicola Livingstone is a Lecturer in Real Estate at the Bartlett School of Planning, UCL.  Before coming to UCL in 2014 she worked at Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, where she also completed both her undergraduate degree and PhD.  Nicola's research falls into two distinct but complementary dimensions, the first is critical social theory and the second is real estate. These dimensions of research have emerged as a result of her undergraduate degree in real estate management and her PhD topic.
Research Summary
Nicola's PhD, awarded in 2011, examined the growth of charity retailing in the UK from a Marxist perspective.  The PhD adopted an original conceptual approach to how we can understand charity and charity retailing in British capitalism.  Much of Nicola's work is informed by Marxist thought.  In addition to real estate research, Nicola’s research interests include the third sector, the political economy of charity and food insecurity.  She has recently completed commissioned work on food aid for the Scottish Government.  Her current research is focused on:
•    The restructuring and evolution of the multi-asset portfolio
•    How the retail market is changing through online and multi-channel interfaces
•    Food insecurity in the UK
•    UK housing provision
•    How we can interpret the role of 'charity' in the twenty-first century
•    Higher education pedagogy, specifically mentoring.
Teaching Summary
Nicola delivers real estate investment modules to postgraduate and undergraduate students at the BSP.  She also teaches the first year module ‘introduction to real estate’.  She completed a postgraduate qualification in academic practice in 2013 and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
