Biography

Dr Alves completed her PhD in Psychology in 2016/2017 at Lisbon University Institute, in partnership with King’s College London, which focused on psychological outcome measurement in substance use treatment. Her main research interests are in the involvement of service users with health care provision, as well as service users’ knowledge, attitudes and perspectives about the treatment that they are receiving.

She has a special interest in the field of substance use, having obtained an MSc in Clinical and Public Health Aspects of Addiction at King’s College London (2010) and clinical training as a psychodynamic clinical psychologist in a specialist service for substance use treatment in Lisbon, Portugal.

Prior to joining UCL, she worked as a researcher in many international projects focusing on mental health and the evaluation of psychological treatment outcomes. Dr Alves has also collaborated with non-academic institutions in the field of substance use, including the Global Drug Survey and the EU’s agency European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction.

Dr Alves has secured funding from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and, most recently, from NIHR School for Primary Care Research, to lead a project about the perspectives of service users about substance use treatment delivered in primary care.

Dr Alves collaborates with the UCL Qualitative Research Methods Course as a tutor, and has also tutored and supervised UCL BSc Population Health students. She is also a distance-learning teaching fellow in various mental health-related MSc modules.
