Prof Paul Wrobel

After graduating in Engineering from Cambridge University and later with an MSc from London University, he worked for 10 years in the Sea System of MoD (PE), concluding as Design Integration Manager for HMS Upholder. Following a secondment in Industry, he joined Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd for 10 years and was the Technical Director during the peak of the TRIDENT submarine programme responsible for the Engineering disciplines, re-entry into the Surface Ship Market - winning both the LPH (HMS Ocean) and the LPD (HMS Albion and Bulwark) and launching the Business Improvement Programme across the company. Finally he established the Integrated Project Team for “Batch 2 Trafalgar” Submarine – (four companies and the customer).

He then led a multi-national team for the newly formed Thales Naval Limited winning the competition for the design of the Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF). He joined QinetiQ at the beginning of 2004 as the Director of Naval Programmes responsible for setting strategy across the Naval Domain and acting as a catalyst to transform the business to a successful international industrial partner.

He was a founder member of the Government’s FORESIGHT Defence Systems and Aerospace Panel, and led the work on the National Defence Industry Technology Strategy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering as well as a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and twice been a member of Council.

His interests include sailing, walking, skiing, music, theatre and travel, his wife is a solicitor/artist, they have three boys.

Research Summary

Research Group: Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering

Research interests include: Novel design concepts, Marine vehicles as nodes in a networked environment and Maritime systems in a Carbon Neutral economy.

Paul is the leader across five Universities of the EPSRC & Industry co-funded project into “Low Carbon Shipping”.

Teaching Summary

Paul Wrobel lectures first, second and third-year Naval Architecture students on Basic Naval Architecture, Mechanics of Marine Vehicles and Marine Design and Production respectively, on Acquisition, Project Management and Ship Design to the fourth-year MEng/MSc Naval Architecture students, on Ship Design to the MTEC course and on Submarine Design to the Submarine Design course.
