My research interests concern the anthropology of Islam (popular piety and Shi‘ism), South Asian ethnography (Pakistan, Kashmir) and political anthropology. My doctoral thesis focused on the lives of working-class men in Lahore, and sought to analyze the relationships between the politics of religious space, sectarian identity and morality in urban Pakistan. I herein document the daily struggles of ordinary Muslims to live decent lives, as well as their ethical concerns over what being a ‘real Muslim’ means to them at a time of intense economic and political uncertainty. My current research extends this analysis by focusing on political life and transforming understandings of citizenship among the urban poor in the context of Pakistan’s forthcoming general elections.
