I am interested in the development of the heart in the developing fetus, and cardiac disease in the adult. There is growing evidence that the molecular pathways driving heart development and adapting it to relatively hypoxic conditions in utero are important in understanding the causes of and potential novel therapies for cardiac disease.
We have recently published work outlining a novel mechanism controlling cardiac energy metabolism in the neonate and adult, and a novel hypothesis for the pathogenesis of sudden infant death (cot death).
Our ongoing work centres on the response of the heart to low levels of oxygen, encountered during the course of normal fetal development or as part of disease processes in the human neonate and adult. our overall aim is to identify novel therapeutic targets for cardiac disease.
My medical interest is cardiovascular and general internal medicine, both at UCLH.
I am course organiser of the Drug Development stream of the MSc in Clinical and Experimental Medicine. I lecture on the therapeutics course to clinical students, and the BSc modules on "the heart" and "drug discovery and development"
