I graduated in mathematics from The University of Manchester in 1985 and qualified to teach at Goldsmiths’ College in 1986. I taught in London state schools for eighteen years including eleven years as a Head of Mathematics. As a classroom teacher, I started a part time MSc in Mathematics Education at London South Bank University (LSBU) and completed it as a head of mathematics in 1994. I moved into Higher Education in 2005 to be Course Director of PGCE Mathematics at LSBU. I have been a lecturer and member of the mathematics education group at the Institute of Education since 2009. I am in the final stages of my PhD at UCL.

Research Summary

I am interested in problems of communicating experience, knowledge and understanding of mathematics teaching and learning. I approach this using a discourse analytic approach with a focus on how teachers make sense of specialist and generalist terminology with respect to their practices in contexts of high-stakes accountability.
