Biography

I was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1980. After studying Medicine at the University of Coimbra (founded in 1290), I started my specialisation in Cardiology in 2006. My general Cardiology training was at CHU Coimbra and CH Lisboa Ocidental-Santa Cruz. In late 2012, I moved to Toulouse, France for a Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship at Clinique Pasteur. I continued my training in Cardiac Electrophysiology in London from 2014 onwards at The Heart Hospital - UCL Hospitals, and later at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, until I was appointed Consultant in the Summer of 2017. I am currently a Clinician Scientist at the Institute of Health Informatics University College of London and a Honorary Consultant at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. I run a monthly clinic of Hereditary Arrhythmogenic Syndromes at St. Bartholomew's an a weekly Arrhythmia clinic at Newham University Hospital, and regularly perform catheter ablation procedures of all types of arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation, supraventricular arrhythmias, ventricular arrhythmias, etc.), and implant cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices.

Research Summary

My involvement in Research started simultaneously with my Cardiology training, and I have combined both activities uninterruptedly ever since. After an initial period performing basic science, I chose to focus on clinical science, and later epidemiology and genetics. I have authored over 200 publications in the field of cardiology and arrhythmias, some of which have been included in international guidelines - British, European and American - for the management of cardiovascular disease. My main research interests are atrial fibrillation, sudden cardiac death, catheter ablation techniques/approaches, clinical epidemiology and genetics. In 2015, I was awarded with the Young Investigator Award in Clinical Science at the European Heart Rhythm Association Congress, in Milan. The investigation was on the reproducibly of cryoballoon ablation vs. radio frequency ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation in a multicentre French survey. Those were data from the early days of this technique which has now become mainstream and has gained worldwide usage. In 2016 I started working with Professor JP Casas at the Institute of Health Informatics with the aim of creating a group specialising on the epidemiology of arrhythmic disorders. I am currently studying the natural history of AF in the UK in a database of 6.7 million patients, and identifying the different AF sub-phenotypes based on the concept of clinical trajectories. Further steps of this project include replication of the findings in different datasets from the US, Canada and Norway and identification of imaging, ECG, genomics and proteomic features of each subset in UKBiobank, ELGH, INTERVAL and COMPARE.
