Samantha achieved a first class BSc honours degree in Psychology from the University of Leeds in 2008 and went on to complete a MSc (Distinction) in Health Psychology in 2011 at King's College London and University College London. She joined UCL in 2012 as a Research Assistant in Cancer Screening working with Professor Jane Wardle at the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre. She was subsequently awarded a Medical Research Council PhD studentship to investigate the socioeconomic, attitudinal and smoking-related factors underlying non-participation in lung cancer screening by high risk groups. She completed her PhD in September 2016 and has been appointed as a Research Psychologist within the Cancer Communication and Screening Group of the new Department of Behavioural Science and Health.
Samantha's research interests primarily concern the psychological aspects of lung cancer screening, including socioeconomic and smoking-related disparities in uptake, informed decision-making among lower literacy participants, the psychological impact of screening, and screening as an opportunity for assisting health behaviour change. She is working as part of a multidisciplinary team on a NAEDI initiative Cancer Research UK-funded demonstration pilot of lung cancer screening testing targeted invitation materials and also collaborates on locally-led pilot services..
