Research Summary

During my Ph.D. trajectory at the Donders Institute in Nijmegen I was doing neuroimaging work using fMRI and EEG to unravel cognitive and neural substrates of perception and understanding in a social setting. I've also ran behavioural social interaction studies. It was during this period that I was introduced to the elegant precepts of hierarchical predictive coding and active inference. My two functional MRI projects provided evidence for the hierarchical predictive neural processing in action perception, as postulated by the free-energy principle.

Last December, I was awarded the Rubicon-grant to join Prof. Friston’s and Dr. Kilner's labs to investigate how interoception and hierarchical active inference contributes to consciousness and emotional processing. For this purpose I am using MEG and physiological signals and try to establish  mechanisms that support these core human capacities. I also have strong interest in basic neural implementation of hierarchical active inference in the human brain and investigate this aspect by analyzing concurrently acquired layer-specific fMRI and EEG.
