I became a Reader in Hepatology & Gastroenterology at UCL in October 2010, having been a Senior Lecturer since 2003 and a Consultant Gastroenterologist in PancreaticoBiliary Medicine at UCLH from 2000. I undertook undergraduate studies in science (theoretical physics) and medicine at University of NSW, Sydney, with postgraduate training mainly at Guy’s and King’s College Hospital, London and advanced endoscopy training (ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound) in Paris, Amsterdam and Indianapolis. Over the last several years I have developed a clinical research programme aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with liver and pancreaticobiliary malignancy, and lead an active clinical and laboratory-based research group based at the Royal Free Campus.
The research interests of this group centre on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of biliary tree cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma and pancreatic cancer, as well as benign conditions such as chronic pancreatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. These conditions represent a significant number of patients referred for specialist opinion to UCLH and the Royal Free Hospitals, and the activity of the research group is linked closely with the clinical HPB service at the two sites.
Past Chairman, North East Thames Gastroenterology Training Sub-Committee. Current member of Education Committee, European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Past President of Pancreatic Society of GB&I, current Chairman of British Society of Gastroenterology Pancreatic Section and vice-Chair of Pancreatic Guidelines Development Group. Heavily involved in postgraduate teaching/training as an accredited trainer in therapeutic endoscopy, European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
