I am an architect and urban planner educated in Brazil and in the UK. Prior to my doctoral studies, I worked in architectural and urban design practices in London and in Brazil. Prior to moving to the UK, I conducted research, financed by FAPESP (Sao Paulo Research Foundation), on environmental design, focusing on the effects of the built environment on urban microclimates in several areas in the city of Sao Paulo, participated in architectural competitions and assisted in other research activities in sustainable design at the University of Sao Paulo.

Research Summary

My research interests span across the themes of urban regeneration and neighbourhood change, housing policy, urban diversity and social mix, and comparative planning systems. I am particularly interested in the wider impacts of urban regeneration and housing policies on well-being and social sustainability.

My current research investigates the growth of the private rented sector in London and questions its suitability as a mainstream housing tenure in the capital, where the sector is scheduled to become the largest tenure by 2025. It investigates the work of local authorities, who are responsible for regulating the sector, by enforcing housing standards and prosecuting landlords who do not meet their legal requirements, and the experiences of private renters, with special attention to their housing trajectories within London, their perceptions of housing security and their views on their housing situation.

From 2015 to 2017 I worked as a Research Associate on the EU Framework 7-funded research project ‘DIVERCITIES: Creating social cohesion, social mobility and economic performance in today's hyper-diversified cities’. The project focused on the complexities of governing diversity in 14 different cities in Europe and Canada. My PhD thesis explored interpersonal interactions in neighbourhoods that underwent extensive physical redevelopment. I undertook in-depth, multi-method, internationally comparative research on the social impacts of regeneration on major housing estates in London and Amsterdam and conducted fieldwork in neighbourhoods that house large concentrations of ethnic minority groups.
