Research Summary

Earth Sciences

I am a geophysicist interested in cross-disciplinary applications of seismic imaging.

I am the UCL Principal Investigator of OSCAR (2014-18), a UK-led research consortium in Earth Sciences funded by the Natural Environment Research Council.  We are investigating the interactions between underwater volcanoes and ocean circulation - by developing a novel integrated crust-ocean model of the Panama Basin in the East Pacific.

I served as an Associate Editor of Annals of Geophysics (2013-16).

Higher Education Pedagogy

I am interested in research-teaching-outreach synergy.  I have edited two research volumes in higher education pedagogy in geosciences (Tong, Springer, 2014) and a hybrid textbook-research volume linking cutting-edge research in seismology across astrophysical, planetary and earth sciences (Extraterrestrial Seismology, Tong & Garcia, Cambridge University Press, 2015).

I am passionate about advancing students as partners to shape higher education pedagogy.  Together with students and academics in the UK and partner universities, I am the lead of the scholarship project R=T (www.RequalsT.org).  Our partnership work has resulted in the book "Shaping Higher Education with Students: Ways to Connect Research and Teaching" (UCL Press, open access).  It can be downloaded here: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-press/browse-books/shaping-higher-education-with-students
