Biography

I am an urban geographer and participatory video-maker specialising in urban development planning, urban food systems, urban governance and politics, and participatory action research in cities in the global North and South.

Prior to my doctorate at the Centre for Agroecology, Water, and Resilience at Coventry University I worked at the Development Planning Unit as a Research Officer and as a Graduate Teaching Assistant on the MSc Urban Development Planning programme.

I have also previously worked as a Research Assistant at the London International Development Centre and the International Institute for Environment and Development as well as various consultancies on issues including urban water and sanitation, communal and collective land tenure options for low-income groups, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Research Summary

I am a Research Fellow on the research project, Knowledge in Action for Urban Equality (KNOW). I work across two themes, 'Comparative Inquiry for Urban Equality', specifically on the theme of urban extreme poverty, and 'Expanding ODA Research Capacity for Urban Equality'.

My research interests include community-self organisation, collective action, urban agriculture, critical urban theory, and urban decision-making processes. I am particularly interested in the ways in which the relations between actors both shape and are shaped by urban spatial development at the neighbourhood and city levels.

In my doctoral research I used a combination of qualitative and participatory methodologies, including participatory video-making, to explore the politics of self-organisation and the social production of space in urban community gardens.
