The proofs of Tormento
In April 2013 I undetook a research trip to the Casa Museo Galdos in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to examine the proofs of Galdos's novel Tormento. One of Galdos's best and most keenly debated novels, Tormento has provoked a wide range of differing interpretations. To date the critical discussion of the text has neglected to take account of the thousands of changes Galdos made to the text at the proof stage. I therefore went through those original proofs page by page to see how the novel was still taking shape at that late stage of the creative process. I intend to present my findings at the AHGBI conference in Galway, Ireland in April 2014 and in Nineteenth-Century Hispanists International Network in Toronto, Canada, later that month.
