Looking at Risk: Invisible Women and Their Secrets Unveiled
I am completing a five-chapter book that considers women's entry into the publc sphere between 1780 and 1848. With chapters on optical instruments, popular spectacles, anatomy, art education, and the relationship between the press and the art Salon, this volume serves as a companion volume to my other work on dangerous and risky looking in the long nineteenth century (1789-1914). Chapters and related work have appeared as "The Invisible Woman and Her Secrets Unveiled" (Yale Journal of Criticism), "Voir au limites du corps" (in Exhibition Catalogue, Musée d'Orsay, Lanternes Magiques, tableaux transparents), "Reading Invisibility" (in Field Work), and "Seeing Women: Rhetorics of Visibility, the Women's Press, and the July Monarchy Salon" (Art Journal). Versions of the chapters on anatomy and art education have been delivered at international conferences such as Society for French Historical Studies, NCFS, and SDN.
