How the French Got Modern
This project explores the culture wars of the 1880s and 1890s through a series of case studies revolving around the entry of Manet's Olympia into the French National Collections, Zola's attempts to be elected to the Academy amidst the scandalous publication of La Bete humaine, and the staging of Oscar Wilde's Salomé in Paris during his imprisonment in Reading. A French translation of the Manet chapter appeared in Ruptures (ENSBA/Louvre). A portion of the Zola chapter appeared as "Bodies in Crisis" (in From Goethe to Gide).
