Age, Ageing and Life Writing in Cuba
My research questions are as follows. How has old age has been characterized in Cuba since the early 1990s? Are the traumas of radical socio-economic decline manifest in these discourses of old age? How have these discourses responded to the contrapuntal pressures of economic recovery and an ever-ageing population? How do these discourses compare to constructions of old age in the Cuban diaspora? I am seeking to answer these questions through close-grained readings of older people’s self-perceptions and projections; building on the solid methodological foundations established by life-writing scholars, I will analyse discourses of old age in single-author autobiographies, letters, diaries and blogs (a nascent and as-yet under-studied form of autobiographical writing).
