Social and Cultural Dynamics Group
The Social and Cultural Dynamics Research Group is concerned with understanding processes of change and reproduction in all kinds of material cultural systems, from technological systems through to ritual and artistic representations. Whilst members adopt a broad range of intellectual perspectives and research methodologies, all share a particular interest in archaeological theory, and the development of anthropological and sociological perspectives in the study of material culture. Research Group members are particularly interested in studying the dynamics of material culture and social systems comparatively, cutting across traditional regional and chronological boundaries. One of the broadest Research Groups, it is central to the Institute’s commitment to world archaeology; members are involved in field research on five continents. The research combines team-based fieldwork, usually involving international collaboration, and individual scholar research, based on innovative theoretical perspectives and benefiting from group interaction.
